Undergraduate Propulsion Laboratory

In the undergraduate propulsion laboratory, there are variety of experimental setups used for demonstrations and laboratory work in courses such as AE 334 Propulsion Systems I and AE 410 Aerospace Engineering Laboratory. These experiments teach students the fundamentals of propulsion. These equipment are used for laboratory works in the Propulsion courses and also for laboratory and project works in AEE 410 course.

  • Ramjet and Pulse Jet Propulsion Test Facility: Thrust, drag and specific fuel consumption of various ramjets and pulse jets at low air flow Mach numbers (M<0.29) are measured. Fuel of such engines can either be butane-propane gas mixture or gasoline. Students perform experiments as a part of AE334 Propulsion Systems I using this setup.

  • Impulse and Reaction Turbines Test Units: These are bench-top units which are used to test miniature turbines reaching 50 000 rpm and 30 000 rpm respectively at no-load configuration.

  • Nozzle Performance Test Unit: This is a bench-top unit, which is used to test miniature nozzles for their optimum performance and theoretical pressure ratios. Supersonic velocities around 500 m/sec are reached.

  • Combustion and Flame Propagation Test Facility: Accurate combustion research of various fuel/air ratios is carried out. The combustion products are analyzed through an electronic gas analyzer. Determination of the flame speed, flame zones and stability characteristic can be undertaken.

  • Small Turbojet Test Setup: This setup consists of a 100 N thrust small turbojet engine that sits on a rail-based thrust measurement system, which is equipped with a miniature load cell for thrust measurements. The students can measure thrust, fuel consumption, rpm and the exhaust gas temperature of the jet engine.

  • Small Piston-Prop Test Setup: This setup consists of a 5cc compression ignition internal combustion engine driving a 15 cm diameter two-bladed propeller. Students can measure the thrust using a miniature load cell as well as the fuel consumption and the rpm of the engine.
