Thesis Writing

  • The thesis format should comply with the requirements set by the Graduate School of Natural and Applied Sciences.
  • The abstract section should summarize the work done and the main conclusions drawn.
  • The introduction section should include the motivation, a literature survey, the purpose and scope of the work. A thorough literature survey should help the reader place your work with respect to others.
  • The formulation of the problem, methods used, codes developed or the experimental setup used in the thesis, must be given in a sufficient detail.
  • The results obtained must be presented in a logical order with proper discussions and as clearly and concisely as possible. Each figure and table should be cited in the text and discussed. The reader should not be expected to draw his/her own conclusions!
  • The references must be listed either in the order they appear in the document, or in an alphabetical order. The common rules for referencing technical papers, reports, books, internet sites, etc. must be strictly followed.
  • It is the student's sole responsibility to make sure that the thesis is written in proper scientific English without any grammatical and spelling errors. If needed, Academic Writing Center of METU (http://www.awc.metu.edu.tr/), professional editors or native speakers should be consulted.
